I’m pretty sure you can safely call it an addiction when I’ve eaten 6 of these Chicago style hot dogs in 6 days. A couple weeks ago I had the opportunity to visit Chicago again courtesy of Kenmore for their Kenmore Blogger Summit. We had an incredible time! I’ll be sharing more about that in another post, but you have to believe me when I tell you these Chicago dogs cannot wait!! Have you ever tried one?
Portillo’s happened to be almost next door to our hotel. Great food, many choices!
I have to be honest and tell you I wasn’t thrilled with their appearance at first. But as I’ve gotten older, I’m more willing to trust others….there must be something to this “taste.” I wondered what all the fuss was about, and figured it’s only one bite after all. Oh I’m so glad I did! I’m so glad I threw caution to the wind and gave it a try. You will too!
Michelle of the Domestic Mama & the Village Cook & I both enjoyed the fall we normally don’t see in Florida.
So my first trip to Publix had me scavenging up the ingredients……dill pickles, bread and butter pickles, peppers, tomatoes, onions, mustard, poppy seed, celery salt, and of course hot dogs and buns. Not all ingredients are exact as some of them are hard to find like sport peppers and poppy seed buns. Also I finally found a brand of pickles that doesn’t included yellow dye #5. Have your heard of Bubbie’s pickles? They are good! And of course…I had to use my favorite Applegate Farms hot dogs!
Now of course I put my little twist on it. I found I like to dice up the peppers and pickles just like I do the onion and tomato. That way each bite has the exact same amount of everything. I used banana peppers since I couldn’t find sport peppers, and I made my own poppy seed buns. Boil/steam your hot dogs and buns, press your bun into the poppy seeds, layer hot dog, mustard, onions, sweet pickles, tomatoes, peppers, dill pickles and celery salt.
So here’s my take on the Chicago style hot dog, and for breakfast I even tried a Chicago style bagel. Mmm……Tell me…..what are your favorite Chicago eats? I’d like to start a list in case I make it back again someday! 😉

The secret to the hot dog is those tiny hot peppers, isn’t it? LOVE them!
