This isn’t exactly what you’d call a recipe, but I just have to share it with you. It should be no surprise to you that I try to avoid processed foods as much as I can. Now I still haven’t perfected homemade yogurt (though I’ve only tried a few times), but years ago I switched to buying whole milk, plain yogurt and flavoring it ourselves with fruit and honey. Thankfully the girls love it. For some reason though, we only usually eat it with frozen organic berries. I haven’t thought outside that box. Don’t know why……
I haven’t been eating yogurt much over the past couple years, but found myself in the mood for it last week. I didn’t want berries, and then I had a flashback of which types of yoplait custard style yogurt I used to buy and eat when I lived in Hawaii. What were my favorites…..and one of them was orange. I don’t remember the actual name of that flavor, but thought it’d be worth trying out. Sure enough slicing and sectioning my orange, and squeezing out any remaining juice from the core and peels with a smidge of honey actually mimicked the taste. Yes!!
Since then I’ve had this snack several more times. It’s so good! Now I know all the rage is greek yogurt, and many people still like to eat low fat, but there is also a popular nutritional line of thinking that fat isn’t the enemy. That when you take out fat, you add in chemicals and sugar and other things that aren’t REAL food. Fat also fills us up, satisfies us and our bodies need fat. If I learned anything on my 19 day Daniel fast, it’s that my body definitely needed nuts, avocado, oil and natural fats because eating only fruit and veggies left me hungry all the time.
The yogurt I buy is called Cascade Fresh and I purchase it at Whole Foods. I get a huge 32 oz container of it for $2.49. As you can see, it’s a great deal! I can’t find the same at the regular grocery store….see, Whole Foods is not your whole paycheck. You just have to know what to buy, and compare your prices. You can make this snack with any yogurt of your choice or homemade. 😉
- ¾ cup yogurt
- 1 orange, sliced and sectioned
- Juice of 1 orange
- 1 tsp honey, or to taste
- Put yogurt in bowl.
- Slice orange and cut sections into small pieces, and place in yogurt.
- Squeeze juice from the middle core into bowl. I usually get about ¼ cup of juice.
- Drizzle honey on top, and mix in.
