Back home & our Krispy Kreme tradition

Most of you know I’ve been calling South Florida home since 1993, but that from the age of 10 through 19 I grew up in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. My girls are being raised as my husband was….warm, sandy beaches, palm trees, hurricanes, gators, orange groves, lizards, minimal season changes and Disney! I love Florida, and you know we LOVE Mickey!!

I love that they get to experience growing up as daddy did, but it’s so nice when I get a chance to get back “home” and give the girls a taste of what I grew up with….rolling hills, fireflies, quick access to mountains & hiking, berry picking, season changes, small town feel, good southern cookin’, trees, trees & more trees and of course Krispy Kremes.

Over the last few years we’ve developed the tradition of stopping in at Krispy Kreme when we’re here visiting…after all Winston-Salem IS the birthplace of Krispy Kreme doughnuts (1937). We can’t come home without purchasing these sugary confections. It’s something my girls really look forward to….no trip home to Winston-Salem would be complete without a visit to purchase a dozen original glazed doughnuts and ice cold milk to wash them down. I know you can pick these sugary confections up at many locations throughout the United States, but it’s not the same. You’ve simply gotta try one here. 😉

So last night my oldest daughter and I stopped in to pick them up. Can you feel our excitement? Time for some mother/daughter bonding next to the “HOT now” sign.

Look at these beauties frying up…but looks are deceiving! If you’ve never had a Krispy Kreme, you’d be surprised at how light and airy they are. Which makes it super easy to inhale 3 of them before you’ve realized it and that can be dangerous & addictive!

And now for a trip under the waterfall of glaze…..Mmmm

And one last jaunt down the conveyor belt before they get all nestled up in a box ready to go home with you!

And there’s NO way around it! I’m not even going to even try to convince you that they’re nutritious or fit into a REAL food way of life, and definitely not a low-carb one, but I’d also like to mention that life without our annual trip to Krispy Kreme certainly wouldn’t be much fun! 😉

Where are you from? Do you have any traditions when you take your kids back home?

* And if you LOVE Krispy Kreme…be sure to “share” or “Facebook recommend” this post. There are still those who’ve yet to discover the incredible Krispy Kreme!

  1. I’m from a suburb of St. Louis and moved to Raleigh with my husband when I was 28 years old. I loved North Carolina and I loved Krispy Kreme. 10 years later we moved our family to Denver, CO. No Krispy Kreme. Boo.

Finally one opened about 10 years ago and yes, I sat in a car with my two teenagers and two of their friends for HOURS waiting for our turn through the drivethru…it was a night to remember for sure.

Now…if I go by and that ‘hot’ sign is on…my car is programmed to enter the parking lot…those hot donuts are not to be missed!

Yes Barbara…not to be missed! I loved hearing your story. I love that food is such an integral part of our children’s memories!! 😉 I just ate one for breakfast, and though it’s good….not the same as the HOT ones last night fresh off the conveyor belt!

Velva….I feel my girls get the best of both worlds with living in South Florida and vacationing in North Carolina. They’ve been to the mountains up here many times, and now we’re venturing from WS to the NC coast later today….the beaches of my childhood (NC, VA & MD). So excited to share with them another part!!

I love this post, and a great way to document it for your daugter!

I have been living in Sarasota, Florida since 1990, my husband a little longer, but we both grew up in Michigan. He grew up out in the country in the middle of the state and I in Grand Rapids. My parent’s back yard was always full of fireflies, and fresh tomatoes (nothing tastes better than my mom’s home grown tomatoes)Our daughter has had a chance to experience picking (and eating) raspberries which is always a treat. Her grandpa lives on a dairy farm, so she also has had a chance to pick grapes, carrots, green beans, apples, squash, potatoes, and many more since she was little. When she was 15 was the first time she got to see snow and have Christmas with the whole family experience. She got to go sleding, ice skating downtown, and make a snow angel. It was perfect weather for her to see and have fun in snow. The Christmas treat my mom makes for Christmas each year is a Dutch pastry banket, we always miss that when we are in Florida.

But we get to shop for Christmas tree wearing shorts, and jet ski on New Year’s Day! Sunsets on the beach only minutes away all year round!

Lyndsey…thanks for stopping by! I scooted over to check out your blog. I love finding other Florida blogs so glad you left a comment! I’ll be adding you to my Florida Food Blog list soon.

So great about the snow memories. My girls haven’t seen snow yet…born and raised in Florida. They’re hoping to “find” and “see” some snow this year….and play in it!! 🙂

I grew up in Mount Airy, so I completely feel the same way about Krispy Kremes. There is nothing like a hot one coming right off the conveyor belt. And you don’t even realize you’ve eaten half the box!! But so yummy! When my sis-in-law was in labor 2 months ago, my dad and I were calling the locations in Winston to see who was open at 3 am so we could get hot ones! Great memories.

  5. There’s no Krispy Kreme around here 🙁

The one and only time I had Krispy Kreme was when I visited my brother in Indianapolis quite a few years ago. It was so good and melt in your mouth – unfortunately I have never had another one because they just don’t seem to exist around me! So sad!

  7. I have family in South Carolina. We always hit a Krispy Kreme when we go to visit. Fortunately, I don’t have to wait until our next visit because they are putting one in a couple miles from my house in Jersey. So dangerous. They are my absolute favorite doughnuts!

  8. Nice work! I have not had a Krispy Kreme in over a decade and you officially have me drooling! Yum, yum Denise! We are headed back to Greensboro/Charlotte/Triangle to visit family in August…if my in-laws feed my babies KK, at least I can say, “Denise did it too!” Enjoy your weekend!
